When coaching my clients in the health and wellness sector I always find they want to know the “one” thing they should be taking. The one magic supplement or pill to make them feel better. Anyone who knows me (and has seen my vitamin and herbal cabinets in my house) knows it’s not that easy. However, I can tell you that when in doubt take more magnesium.
Magnesium controls the function of over 500 enzymes in the body. Magnesium is your relaxing mineral that enables your muscles to relax. Without it your muscles (as well as yourself) will remain tense, twitchy, and nervous. Show me a kid who has ADD or minor motor tics and I will show you a kid who lacks magnesium in their diet. Every time you are stressed you drive magnesium out of your cells. We simply are not taking in enough Magnesium for the amount that we are releasing. Deficiency in adults can cause irregular heartbeat, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, depression and insomnia. Another reason we are deficient in this powerful mineral is because we spend so much time eating Dairy or taking Calcium that we deplete our Magnesium levels. When in doubt take Magnesium or enjoy the following foods apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, brown rice, tofu.
